Third-Party iPhone 13 Screen Repairs won’t Disable Face ID
It’d be annoying if you found you Face ID failure after you’ve just replaced your broken iPhone 13 screen. Repair technicist noticed that replacing iPhone 13 display screen, Face ID would stop working. Now, good news lies ahead. Apple has confirmed that it’ll fix the problem via a software update.

With the ‌iPhone 13‌ models, Apple added a small microcontroller that pairs the ‌iPhone 13‌ to its display. When performing a display repair, this microcontroller must be paired to the new display using Apple's tools, which independent repair shops do not have access to.

Without this pairing process, swapping an ‌iPhone 13‌ display with a new display results in an error message that says "Unable to activate Face ID on this ‌iPhone‌."

Repair shops would need microscopes, i2c sodlering station, and extensive training to replace the iPhone 13 screen. The procedure needs specialist equipment and training, which only a fraction of repair shops were capable of it.

Apple told The Verge that it plans to introduce a software update that will allow for standard display repairs that do not disable Face ID. It means repair shops won’t have to worry about transferring the old Face ID microcontroller to a new screen.
